Strong Legs with Yoga? Absolutely

Many people have come to me and said that the leg muscles are a really strong block of muscles and so making them stronger using only the natural body weight of a person is impossible. To them I say, perhaps difficult but definitely not impossible.

At this point you have to be clear about what you want your legs to be able to do. Are you looking to gain size and definition? Are you looking to increase strength only with no aesthetic element to it? If you case is the former then you might want to incorporate weight training by pumping iron in the gym 2 to 3 times a week. But if you find yourself in the latter situation then Yoga is more than enough to help you reach your goals.

Underneath are a few exercises you can do right away from the comfort of your home.

1. Virabhadrasana - Begin by standing straight with your feet wide apart and your hands at your sides. Now, point your left foot towards your left and bend your left knee. Keep your right leg straight. From here raise your hands to shoulder level and keep your palms facing down. You should look to your left and your back should be straight. Hold this pose for about 30 seconds and return to the original position then do the same on the other side.

2.  Utkatasana - Start by standing straight with your hands at your sides and your feet slightly apart. Now, raise your hands towards the ceiling. Lower your butt by bending your knees and come to a squat position. Hold this position for about 30 seconds and then return to the original position and repeat.

3. Adho Mukha Svanasana - This asana can be used to stretch the hamstrings, chest and lengthen the spine, providing additional blood flow to the head. To perform this sit on your heels as you stretch your arms forward on the mat and lower your head. Form a table with your body as you push with your hands and strengthen your legs while slowly raising your hips. Press your heels down and let your head hand freely and tighten your waist. Hold this for 10 to 12 seconds then repeat.
